Midland Community Theater Unveils New LED Stage Decor

The new LED wall cost around $1 million and is part of a larger theater renovation.

MIDLAND, Texas – At Midland Community Theater, it’s over with the old and the new. Well, at least in part.

“We were able to penetrate the LED walls installed before the project to build our hall and educational spaces,” said Timothy Jebson, Executive Director of MCT.

The million-dollar LED wall is part of a larger renovation of the theater, and it’s a big upgrade.

“The example I’m using is that we’ve been driving a Corolla for years, and now someone just gave me a Lamborghini,” Jebson said.

The LED wall will facilitate the change of scene, and will even allow more creativity.

“The big thing is if you’re going to do a show like Cinderella, where you want to have a castle and a big staircase for her to come in, before we’re trying to build all these gigantic units with a staircase, now you can have an image of a castle and a staircase, and that makes it much easier to physically do what you’re going to have to do,” Jebson said.

The cast and crew are more than ready to put it to good use.

“They’ve just been so excited, in fact, the cast of Christmas Carol is so excited that they can be the first to use this particular trick,” Jebson said. “For example, the image you see of green is an image that will be used for literally 45 seconds in a show. It wouldn’t be anything we would consider doing if we didn’t have projections.”

This new technology would not have been possible without the support of the community.

“It’s amazing how supportive this community is of not just nonprofits, but the arts world in particular,” Jebson said.

If you didn’t get a chance to make it to the Midland Community Theater on Thursday to see the new LED wall, they’ll have a free screening of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” on Sunday at 6 p.m.
