“I never want to repeat myself”

Peter Dinklage attends the UK premiere of “CYRANO” at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square on December 7, 2021 in London, England.

In a new interview, Peter Dinklage looks back at his acting credits and how it’s not just about his height, while promoting his latest musical film, Cyrano.

Talk to The independentDinklage, 52, said: “After playing Tyrion everyone wants you to play Tyrion. Or a version of him. And that’s what you shouldn’t be doing. I never want to repeat myself: Part of the fun of acting is being someone different every time. Dinklage won four prime-time Emmys and a Golden Globe for his performance as Game of thrones’ the dwarf prince Tyrion Lannister. For eight years, Dinklage’s performance as the brilliant, courageous, romantic and drunken Lannister made him famous around the world.

Since then, Dinklage has starred in films completely different from his character Tyrion, but has now landed a starring role in his most Tyrion-esque character since. Thrones. Play the lead role in Cyrano, a new musical adaptation of the piece Cyrano de Bergerac, it’s the film version of a 2019 Broadway play that Dinklage also starred in. Written by Erica Schmidt, its 2019 version is based on the original 1897 play, written by Edmond Rostand, which features the real-life story of a 17th-century French writer and duelist.

“Erica Schmidt, our brilliant adaptator and screenwriter, was commissioned to write a stage version of Cyrano de Bergerac”Says Dinklage. “But the original is quite long, and it was written 120 years ago when people didn’t have the internet and didn’t care how much time they spent in the theater. We are more distracted now. Erica reduced it to the essentials, took the love monologues and turned them into love songs. For lyrics and music, she recruited musicians from indie rock band The National, which Dinklage discovered after hearing them in a Game of thrones makeup trailer in Northern Ireland. “I told Erica to listen to them, because they sing about love and sorrow, and they are Renaissance men who have jumped into the project wholeheartedly.”
